Longer version of my issue described here: stack overflow link, but in short I was installing WSL on windows host 10 while running ubuntu on virtualbox virtual machine, and after that it crashed and I've encountered lots of weird errors despite trying numerous solutions.
Help very much appreciated, two years of work is on the currently inaccessible vm ;).
